Families happy in new Ile Perseverance homes

The Ile Perseverance estate offers the nation one of the most desirable housing options ever seen locally.

Built on land reclaimed from the sea by dredging, this government housing project is developed in clusters comprising units of apartments, town houses and semi-detached units.

In February many families got the keys to their new homes.

Local media reports echoed the joy and satisfaction of the occupants of the new houses.

I visited Ile Perseverance recently to find out how one family is settling in:

Hazel Port invited me in her new house. She shares the three-bedroom town house with her husband Bernard and daughter, Nathalie – who is married to Harry.

Nathalie and Harry have a five-year-old daughter, Rina.

Hazel – who is an elderly lady – spends most days at home. She runs the household and takes care of her husband who is not very well.

Already familiar with the sequence and tempo of how things happen in her new community, she shared her observation:
“At this time of the day, it is quiet here,” she said, pointing to the lane separating her house and one block of apartments.

“Around 3.30pm the children will start drifting in from school and the atmosphere then gets more excited.
“Around 4.30pm the adults will hurry back from work.”

Although she is yet to memorise the names of her neighbours, Hazel expressed her joy of sharing that beautiful place with such lovely people.

She enjoys going to the community shop:

“A well stocked-up shop!” she exclaimed. “It is set up in a two-room house not far from here. The shopkeeper cares. I spend quite some time there,” she said.

She is happy the shop has all the basic items she needs.

Reacting to comment about the new environment, she said, “if all residents uphold the respect, peace and level of cleanliness, Ile Perseverance is the ideal place to raise a family.”

Hazel is confident Ile Perseverance is a model for other communities to follow.
